Belgrade in Itaewon – Serbians Really Like Their Meat

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to visit Belgrade. I have never had Serbian food, but a quick Google search informed me that, well, damn there is a lot of meat involved in Serbian. Count me in.

How to get there: The easiest way to get to Belgrade is to take the subway to Itaewon Station and depart from Exit 1. Walk for about 250 meters until you see ABC shoe store on the main strip and make a right. Walk up the hill and you will pass Grill5Taco and My Chi Chi’s are on your left with a the CU convenience store on your right. You will need to walk a little longer up the hill and you will see Belgrade on your right across from Sugar Daddy.

Service and Atmosphere: We arrived just after 1pm and the restaurant was fairly empty. We had free range of the place and decided to sit on the second floor. The first floor consists of the bar, the second is a standard dining room and the third floor is a terrace that opens at night. A very simple decor of wooden tables and chairs, and pictures of the motherland. Service was great. There was only one person in the restaurants and surprisingly, the food was served in a timely manner.

Food and Drink: Today we had the Cevapi (beef sausages), the Rolled Chicken and the Stuffed Chicken. We also ordered a couple of Cokes and waters. Simple. Simple.

Cevapi (14,000KRW):  The Cevapi are traditional Serbian sausages cooked over a fire grill. I noticed the grill actually had an open flame. Although they weren’t the biggest, the sausages themselves were well seasoned and juicy. They were topped with onions and were laid on a  bed of lettuce. They came with three flavours of sauces, but honestly, we just ate them without the sauces. The meat was flavourful enough.

Rolled Chicken (14,000KRW):  Ahh chicken wrapped in bacon. Now this is something I can get on board with! The chicken pieces were tender and juicy and of course, the bacon added more flavour than a normal human being (and heart) can handle. Like the Cevapi, it was served on a bed of onions and lettuce. It also came with complimentary fresh bread and sour cream. Food. Oh so much food.

Stuffed Chicken (15,000KRW): This was the highlight of the meal. The stuffed chicken was amazing. The chicken was rolled with bacon and stuffed with cheese. It was literally a cholesterol infused delight that required an extra dose of Lipitor. It came with a side of fries, a traditional Serbian side dish. There were a few vegetables-like things hanging around. They stayed on our plate for the duration of the meal.

Value: The whole bill came out to roughly 52,000KRW with the drinks. We really wanted to try the dessert, specifically the tart filled with caramel, chocolate and peanut butter. Damn. That said, we couldn’t move. In fact, we rolled down the hill. A solid meal with good value. You will leave full.

Who Should Visit Belgrade: The meat Gods are strong here! There is a nice terrace for a late night drink and an extensive drink menu.

Who Should Avoid Belgrade: Could be a little tight for the kiddos. There wasn’t that much room. Just take note.

  1. Serbian food is like the opposite of Asian food! but… i imagine it’s the perfect place to go when you’re craving meat! and lots of it!
